Rejoining the workforce is a vital step for people experiencing homelessness to rebuild their lives and independence.
Sandor’s visit to Adelaide to see family turned into two years of homelessness when the COVID-19 pandemic closed borders, leaving him stranded. After couch surfing with family and a year of sleeping rough, he moved to temporary accommodation in a backpacker hotel and then a boarding house.
Sandor started coming to Hutt St Centre for meals and eventually connected with our Pathways Employment Program.
When a job opportunity with Scouts Recycling became available, Pathways Officer Kiersten asked Sandor if he was interested in applying. With an enthusiastic “Yes!”, Kiersten helped him get job-ready by supporting him with his resume and police clearance.

Now, for the first time in ten years, Sandor is working, saving for his future, and building confidence. He’s been with Scouts Recycling for four months, helping to sort bottles and cans.
“Instead of surviving - I’m thriving now. Thank you very much, because if it wasn’t for people who donate then Hutt St wouldn’t be able to continue doing the programs that they do. So, it’s much appreciated and very kind.”
Your support empowers people like Sandor to achieve independence and a brighter future. Thank you!
