You’re making lifesaving healthcare possible

03 Mar 2025

When people don’t know when their next meal is coming or where they’ll spend the night, healthcare is often not a top priority.

The Hutt Street Health Program, started in July 2024, in partnership with Sonder, is changing that — giving people the care they need, thanks to your support.

Led by James, a Drug and Alcohol and Mental Health Counsellor, Debbie, an Occupational Therapist, and Rema, a Diabetes Educator, this program brings much-needed healthcare directly to people facing homelessness.

More than half the people who visit Hutt St Centre are sleeping rough, leaving serious health issues unaddressed or even unknown. Many are facing dangerous health challenges alone, often without realising the risks involved.

“If you’re sleeping rough, booking in to see a health professional probably isn’t high up on the priority list,” explains James. “It’s more about survival — but they could benefit from that support. And it’s great that people who want treatment can access that so easily here.”'

Peter, who struggled to manage his diabetes while experiencing homelessness, was at risk of serious health complications. Since working with Rema in October, he’s gained the knowledge and support to manage his condition.

“Having Rema here helps me focus on what I’m supposed to eat and do. Now, when I find out someone in the Centre has diabetes, I recommend they go and see Rema.”

Thanks to your support, James, Rema, and Debbie can reach people who may have fallen through the cracks of the healthcare system, offering life-changing treatment.  James shares:

Often the people we work with have had negative experiences with the healthcare system. So, it can take time to build trust and rapport. There’s no referrals, no cost, you don’t need to access Medicare – you just walk through the doors, and the support is there if you want it.”

Your kindness makes this vital healthcare accessible, empowering people to address health issues on their journey towards healing and homefulness. Thank you for making this possible.
